Why a Fish Crow?
The Fish Crow is one of those animals that exists in plain sight while remaining strangely invisible.
For a bird that lives across much of the eastern United States, there is remarkably little information available in one place. A person who becomes curious about Fish Crows quickly discovers that knowledge about them is scattered among a few short scientific papers, field guides, brief species accounts, local observations, and countless anecdotal reports. Much of what is written about them is repeated from source to source, often in only a few paragraphs. The usual key takeaway on any platform, is the fact they sound 'nasally' - so a tad different from the classic Caw of an American Crow. It felt to me an injustice to this magnificent and intelligent species that its origin remain such a mystery 214 years after it was formally named.
The attached monograph/volume is my attempt to bring all of that information together. I assembled it into a near dissertation, to keep it professional and legitimate. It is not cited a page by page basis, because honestly, I was Fish Crowed out. However, naturally, the bibliography/References is included. I will in time go back and cite where it should be cited. But you don't have to be a ornithologist on a mission to read it. It is written for anyone and everyone who are passionate about Crows, but especially - the adored and mysterious Fish Crow. It is my sincere hope others with the same enthusiasm may find the information useful. From what I could gather, this should be the most complete collection of information available on the Fish Crow. 214 years later.
As a long-time crow enthusiast, I originally did not intentionally set out to write a book on the topic. I simply wanted to learn more about a bird that had captured my attention. But the deeper I looked, the more I found myself collecting fragments from different places and wanting to assemble them into a larger picture. I was new to observing Fish Crows, and questions about their evolution led to questions about their relationship to other crows. Questions about their behavior led to finding short studies on communication, intelligence, social structure, and ecology. What began as casual curiosity gradually became a much larger project.
So, much of my motivation comes from my own experiences observing Fish Crows here in southwest Florida. I’ve been feeding and observing American Crows in New England my entire life. But here in Florida, I have found myself watching them daily. And by daily, I really mean from the moment they wake up until they call it a day. I have observed family groups, feeding behavior, bathing rituals, sentinel calls, interactions with other species, the development of young birds, the mobbing, and the subtle routines that make up their lives. I understand my observations do not replace scientific literature, but they do give it context. Facts found in journals became easier to appreciate when I could see similar behaviors unfolding outside my own door. But while I observed just as many previously noted behaviors, I saw many more not documented at all.
The Fish Crow is very much overshadowed by its slightly larger and more famous relative, the American Crow. Yet it is every bit as fascinating. It possesses the same remarkable intelligence, social complexity, adaptability, and capacity to thrive alongside humans. Despite this, it remains comparatively understudied and frequently overlooked.
My hope is that this work serves as a useful starting point for anyone interested in the species. Whether you are a birder, student, researcher, crow enthusiast, or simply someone who noticed a black bird in the neighborhood and wanted to know more, I hope you find something of value here.

The natural world is filled with extraordinary lives unfolding around us every day. Sometimes all it takes is paying attention to one common bird to realize how much there is still left to learn.
